The bigger picture

Once upon a time, there was Generation Me. Generation Whatever. Generation Yeah, Right. Baby-boomers questioned authority. Generation Y disrespects it entirely. They don't follow paths. They set their own. How do organisations tap into this demographic, who use media in a totally new way?

“Man’s main concern is not to gain pleasure or to avoid pain but rather to see a meaning in his life,” said Victor Frankl. The motivational engine that powers human existence is the pursuit of meaning, but most of Gen Y are increasingly feeling fed up that all the work they did at school or uni does nothing for them in the real world. Where's the map that tells you what to do as a career?

We set up yMedia because we believe that individuals and organisations can find meaning in each other and use that to grow into their full potential.

We are based in Auckland, New Zealand and have been around since May 2007. As a social enterprise, profits from our commercial operations go directly into our charitable trust to fund the yMedia Challenge.

So what's a social enterprise?

Social enterprises are social mission driven organizations which trade in goods or services for a social purpose. It is a relatively new term for a type of business that has existed for at least a century.

Whereas conventional businesses distribute their profit among shareholders, in social enterprises the surplus goes towards one or more social aims which the business has.

Social enterprises are distinct from charities (although charities are also increasingly looking at ways of maximising income from trading), and from private sector companies with policies on corporate social responsibility.
