The yMedia Challenge 2008

The yMedia Challenge is a competition connecting tertiary students with community groups through media and technology to create a new or leverage an existing low-cost digital presence for the community group.

The competition is open to all registered yMedia Community Group Members and groups are selected by tertiary students entering the Challenge (in other words - groups are not selected by yMedia) - [how does my organisation become a member?]

Through the yMedia Challenge, community groups are equipped with the skills, knowledge, confidence and networks to propel them ahead of the field, keep them moving forward and to maximise the potential of the digital space.

In a nutshell

  • 2-week competition from July 28th - August 8th
  • 2 students per team, pre-selected by tertiary institutions
  • 8 teams in Auckland
  • 8 teams in Wellington
  • 16 community groups, chosen by the tertiary students
  • Judged by 6 industry professionals
  • Projects managed and maintained online
  • Integrated with 2 community group workshops and 2 student workshops

If my organisation is selected for the Challenge, what do we get?

  • Your community group will receive 2 weeks worth of free time by digital-savvy tertiary students who will work with you to create a new digital presence for your organisation or leverage an existing one.
  • The nature of this digital presence is decided collaboratively between your organisation and the student team - each project will be different and suited to the needs of the organisation and the skills of the student team. [what was created last year?]
  • At the end of the Challenge your organisation will have
    • A fully-functioning and sustainable digital presence [in whatever form] utilizing leading-edge online tools.
    • Contacts within the ‘digital-industry’ to help maintain and enhance your online presence.
    • The knowledge, skills and confidence to keep your online presence relevant, up-to-date and fresh.
  • Learn from other community organisations who have entered the on-line world.
  • Learn how technology can reduce your operating costs and better connect you with members/funding bodies/staff/volunteers.
  • Connect with yMedia Industry Members with potential opportunities to receive low-cost assistance in different areas.
  • Attend the yMedia 2008 Workshops

So how do we sign up for this?

You just need to be a yMedia Community Group Member. This will profile your organisation on the yMedia Challenge 2008 website (to be launched May 30) putting it in front of thousands of tertiary students across Auckland and Wellington.

If your organisation is selected, you will know by July 11 and will be contacted by yMedia.

If you have any questions regarding the process, please contact us.
